First steps in Canada

Congratulations on your successful arrival in Canada!

Once you have come to Canada, there are several important steps you need to take to start your new life in Canada.

Getting documents and identification:

Find your nearest Service Canada Centre to get a Social Insurance Number (SIN), which is a social security number you need to work and get many government services.

Arrange for temporary housing:

If you do not have a permanent home, rent temporary housing, (an apartment or room in a hotel, hostel) or through online platforms like Airbnb. This will give you time to find suitable permanent housing.

Search for permanent housing:

Research the real estate market in the region you are visiting. You can use online platforms to search for housing, or you can contact real estate agents.

Rental properties may require references and credit history, so be prepared to provide this data.

Open a bank account:

Open a bank account at a local bank. You will need proof of your identity and address in Canada.

Job Search:

If you haven’t found a job before you arrive, start actively looking for employment options. Use local resources including online platforms, labor exchanges, and employment agencies.

Depending on your profession, you may need to take additional exams or courses to have your qualifications recognized in Canada.

Obtain health insurance:

Research local health insurance programs and apply for coverage if you haven’t already. (link to article on insurance)

Prepare for your studies (if relevant):

If you plan to continue your education in Canada, contact the institution you are enrolled in and learn about the necessary steps to begin your studies.

Language Learning:

If your English or French is not at a high level, consider enrolling in language courses. Good language skills can make it much easier to adapt and find a job.
